It’s the question we get more than almost any other from East Bay travelers: should I fly out of SFO or Oakland? The reflex is to pick SFO because it’s the big one — but for a lot of Tri-Valley and East Bay trips, that reflex costs you an hour you didn’t need to spend.
The drive is where Oakland wins
From San Ramon, Danville or Walnut Creek, Oakland International sits roughly 22 to 28 minutes away outside peak hours. SFO, on the other side of the bay, is closer to 50 to 60 minutes — and that gap widens fast in the morning commute or when the bridges back up. On door-to-door time alone, OAK is frequently about half the trip.
Oakland’s terminal moves faster, too
It isn’t only the drive. Oakland is a smaller, calmer airport: security lines tend to move quicker, the walk from curb to gate is short, and on the way home baggage claim is steps from the door. For a traveler who values a low-stress start and finish, those minutes and that ease add up.
When SFO is still the right call
None of this makes Oakland the automatic answer. SFO has far more nonstop destinations, nearly all the international service, and more daily frequency on popular business routes. A 40-minute-longer drive is almost always worth it to avoid a connection, a red-eye, or a route Oakland simply doesn’t fly. The math flips the moment your flight only leaves from SFO.
How to actually decide
Compare total travel time and hassle, not distance to the curb. Start from your flight, then work backward:
- Is there a nonstop from Oakland at a time that works? If yes, OAK is usually the easier day.
- Flying internationally or connecting? SFO almost always wins despite the longer drive.
- Traveling at rush hour? Weight the drive more heavily — the SFO gap grows most when traffic is worst.
- Early-morning departure? A shorter, more predictable OAK run means an easier wake-up and a smaller cushion.
